Résumé

L’apprentissage du français comme langue étrangère au Nigeria présente de nombreux défis linguistiques, notamment sur le plan phonologique. Les apprenants nigérians, en particulier ceux issus des communautés yorubaphones, rencontrent souvent des difficultés liées à l’influence de leur langue maternelle sur la prononciation du français. Cette étude examine les erreurs phonologiques produites par les étudiants franco-ondophones à Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. L’objectif principal de cette recherche est d’identifier les types d’erreurs phonologiques les plus fréquentes chez les apprenants et d’analyser les facteurs linguistiques qui influencent ces erreurs. L’étude s’appuie sur les théories du transfert linguistique et de l’interlangue pour expliquer les écarts entre la prononciation cible et la production des apprenants.La méthodologie adoptée combine une approche qualitative et quantitative. Les données ont été collectées à partir d’enregistrements oraux d’étudiants du département de français. Les productions ont été transcrites à l’aide de l’Alphabet Phonétique International (API) afin d’identifier les écarts phonologiques. Les résultats révèlent que les erreurs les plus fréquentes concernent les voyelles nasales, les voyelles arrondies antérieures, certaines consonnes fricatives ainsi que les groupes consonantiques. L’étude montre également que ces erreurs résultent en grande partie de l’influence du système phonologique du dialecte Ondo. Cette recherche propose enfin des recommandations pédagogiques visant à améliorer l’enseignement de la phonétique française dans les universités nigérianes.

Abstract

The learning of French as a foreign language in Nigeria presents numerous linguistic challenges, particularly in the area of pronunciation. Nigerian learners, especially those from Yoruba-speaking communities, often experience phonological difficulties due to the influence of their mother tongue on the pronunciation of French sounds. This study investigates the phonological errors produced by Franco-Ondo bilingual students at Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. The main objective of this research is to identify the most frequent phonological errors among learners and to analyze the linguistic factors that influence these errors. The study draws on the theories of language transfer and interlanguage to explain the deviations between target pronunciation and learners’ actual production. The methodology adopted combines qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through oral recordings of students from the French department. The recordings were transcribed using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) in order to identify phonological deviations. The findings reveal that the most frequent errors involve nasal vowels, front rounded vowels, certain fricative consonants, and consonant clusters. The study also shows that these errors largely result from the influence of the Ondo dialect phonological system. Finally, the research proposes pedagogical recommendations aimed at improving the teaching of French phonetics in Nigerian universities.
