Abstract

One of the forms of arts and a genre of performing arts that developed in Nigeria with unique identity is the folk opera. This art form different forms of arts which include oral, music, dance and visual arts that reflect the African essence and in particular traditional and cultural worldview. With a period of exploration, a decline of the art form was experienced in Nigeria in favour of other forms of performances. Through historical and ethnographic method, this study looks into relevance, content and form of the Nigeria's folk opera and considers the aesthetics of its Africaness. It however advances for its reinasance and recommends ways to reviving the distinctive art for the sustainability, education and the development of African values for greater modern Africa.
